Feedback From My Students

Kooku

Music Producer & DJ

As an electronic music producer with little prior music theory knowledge, I sought Ian's help to raise the standard of my productions. I love making melodic and organic house,  but to reach the next level, I really felt I needed more of a foundation in how to play piano and the theory behind it.

Within just a few short weekly lessons with Ian, I understood how to move between notes on the piano, the scales, chords, triads, progressions, and so much more besides!

Ian always explains everything clearly and in a way which is easy to comprehend, even if you're a beginner. With a job and family, he also managed to pace everything perfectly, so I always felt challenged but never overwhelmed by the outside-of-class exercises.

No question was ever too daft, and he allowed time to discuss what was being learned. All with a friendly, relaxed but professional attitude.

Already I feel the standard of my productions has improved - soaring chord progressions, balanced arpeggios, and a genuine sense of timing - all things learned from Ian, have made recent tracks some of my best yet.

But beyond the music itself, I have found simply learning and playing a massive stress reliever and has given me a sense of achievement for learning even at 45!

Simply put, I can't thank Ian or recommend him enough. I just wish I'd found him sooner.

Before working with Ian I hadn't managed to do a great deal with the piano. I couldn't manage to co-ordinate my left and right hands. I understood the theory but I was really struggling to translate this into actually playing.

Learning piano with Ian has boosted my confidence and improved my creativity. As an electronic music producer it has changed my approach to writing melodies from painstakingly drawing them in on the piano roll to a more organic approach of playing the melody I want for any particular track.

To any music producer wondering if piano lessons will help their music production I would say yes, definitely and I have no hesitation in recommending Ian.
